The Steven King Medal leaderboard tells the story of 2026 in nine words: Atkins, Rowbottom, Berry, Grundy, Gawn, Brayshaw, Steele. Five tacklers and two ruckmen in the top seven. Not a forward in sight. When the DDHP launched in 2002, forwards produced the best score on ground in 23% of matches and tackles in 43%. In 2026 those numbers are 5% and 63%. The medal named after a ruckman, won by a ruckman in its inaugural year, has become an event for the kind of dour defensive midfielder who would have made Warwick Capper - tight shorts, pink helicopter and all - throw up his Bex. The Doogie Cup of 2002 paid out for goals; the Doogie Cup of 2026 pays out for tackles. It's the difference between Hulk Hogan and Bret Hart. One ran wild on you, brother; the other quietly applied the Sharpshooter for fourteen rounds until you tapped. To the round: the Cheats lost. By 104 points. Western Suburbs Walkabout 236 to Cheats 132 - Sam Berry's 54 from the tackle slot and Jordon Sweet's 39 in the ruck doing most of the carving. The Cheats now sit equal third on wins. WSW are top of the ladder, narrowly ahead of the Pirates on percentage, which is a sentence nobody was writing two months ago. Elsewhere the round was decided by margins of 2 and 3. Cazzu beat Corio by three despite Lachlan McAndrew's massive 55 in the ruck, with Lachie Neale (37) and Elliot Yeo's 48 from the tackle slot the difference. Fabulous Phils edged Coolgardie by two, Jordan Dawson posting 54 from the tackle slot off the interchange - because of course he did. Logan Morris kicked 46 as a forward for Fitzroy in their win over Flannie, the round's lone reminder that the actual point of football is still legal.
